Licensed Practical Nursing

The Henrico County-St. Mary’s Hospital School of Practical Nursing, an 18-month LPN program, is currently accepting applications for the cohort to begin in August 2025.

Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN to obtain licensure in Virginia as a licensed practical nurse, or LPN. LPNs obtain employment in long-term care facilities, physician's offices, school clinics and hospitals.

Tuition and Fees

  • Henrico County residents or Bon Secours employees: $3,000

  • Noncounty residents: $3,300

Eligible students may receive financial aid while attending to help cover the cost of the program. You must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov to be considered for financial aid. Application deadline is May 1, 2025. When completing the application form, have tax information and enter the school code 013629.

How do I apply?

Adults and current high school seniors:

After the application is received, the admissions committee will review the following criteria:

  • Three educational/work references.

  • High school transcript (or GED) scores from the U.S., or you may submit an international evaluation.

  • College transcripts. Adults completing college outside the U.S. may submit an international evaluation.

  • Preadmission testing (for adults only).

  • Applicant interview.

The applicants are responsible for obtaining official high school and college transcripts. Applicants will be notified of dates for preadmission testing.

Advanced credit for returning or transfer students will be considered on an individual basis. All admission requirements must be met. At least two-thirds of Practical Nursing II must also be completed.

Classes are held at the Advanced Career Education Center at Hermitage during the first year and at the western Henrico Adult Education Center at Regency during the second year.

Medical Billing and Coding

The Medical Billing and Coding Training Program is an online course designed to prepares students to become a part of the allied health care industry as medical billers and coders. For many years, this training course has served as the career foundation for many employed certified billers and coders.

The course is designed to prepare students to become medical reimbursement and coding professionals, by providing a comprehensive course of study which includes:

  • Understanding the medical billing process, insurance and reimbursement.

  • Coding from physician documentation

  • Use of guidelines and HIPAA compliances.

  • Hands-on, real-world practical strategies.

Students can use this course as the foundation for health care administration jobs. The concepts apply to medical billing and coding exams offered by credentialing associations (e.g., AAPC, AHIMA, NHA, AMBA, MAB and CMAA).

Participants connect each week via video conferencing sessions, with a live instructor to guide students throughout the course. Students use an online portal for ebooks, materials and other resources. Each student who successfully completes the course will receive a certificate of completion and will be prepared to become certified in this thriving industry, and to enter the world of health care. Successful completion of the course requires an 85% class attendance rate and completion of assignments to the satisfaction of the instructor.

  • Certification exam fees are not included.

  • Students must provide their own up-to-date coding manuals (ICD10CM, CPT and HCPCS).

  • A high school diploma or GED is required at the time of registration.

  • Applicants must provide a copy of diploma, GED certificate or transcript.

  • Completion of a basic medical terminology course and/or knowledge of basic medical terminology is recommended but not necessary.
